Common Usages:
This herb has warming and dispersing qualities and is used most often in formulas to treat the congestion of sinusitis (TCM: internal cold-damp symptoms and stagnation) with accompanying headaches, toothaches, fever, and chills; to break up the copious clear or white phlegm of asthma with cough (TCM: internal Lung-cold symptoms); and to treat arthritis, especially when the ribs are affected (OM: internal damp-cold symptoms and Qi stagnation).
Traditional Usages and Functions:
Repels pathogens; alleviates pain due to wind; warms Lungs and transforms phlegm; opens up areas of stagnation. Asarum is said to direct the action of other herbs to the Heart and kidney meridians, especially in the arms and chest.

Cautions in Use:
Do not use during pregnancy. Do not use with Yin deficiency headaches or with cough due to heat in the Lungs (yellow phlegm). Use only in small quantities.
